Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.
A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist forOxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.
Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.

In I Wish You Were Mine, book two of author Lauren Layne’s Oxford series for Random House Loveswept, recently divorced ex-NFL star Jackson Burke has moved to New York and taken a job at Oxford magazine, despite his misgivings about finally using his journalism degree. He actively avoids getting to know his coworkers and tries his best not to like anything about the job or the city he’s now living in. He does, however, finally decide to reconnect with his friend and ex-sister-in-law, Mollie Carrington, whom he’s been avoiding for months now, and though they have a few rocky moments between them, he enjoys talking with her again. So much so that he offers her a place to stay when her own roommate situation goes a little sideways.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m a sucker for a good forbidden romance, unrequited love story and I loved that this one had elements of both, not to mention the whole friends to lovers aspect of it all. The conflicts that came from these elements really fit well with who Jackson and Mollie are as individuals, and lent that much more to their story and their growth as people because of it.
I Wish You Were Mine is a compelling, well-written contemporary romance story with angst, passion, comedy, and drama. I had fun reading this story even as my heart went out to Jackson and Mollie over the disaster that is Mollie’s older sister. I hated the wench, and that’s a testament to how utterly talented Lauren Layne is with her characterization and storytelling abilities. She creates real people on the page of every book and she makes me care enough about her leads to hate a character for being mean to them. I always know I’m getting a great story when I read her work, and that’s certainly true for this newest release.
I loved it!
