Today on Okie Dreams, we share our book review of THE RANCHER’s BABY by Maisey Yates. In THE RANCHER’S BABY, New York Times bestselling author Maisey Yates explores what happens when best friends suddenly become more and what holding onto grief can do to a man…and a friendship.
THE RANCHER’S BABY
THE RANCHER’S BABY is a much more emotionally complex love story than I expected, which isn’t exactly a bad thing since I love me some angst. And Maisey Yates is one of the best at putting her character’s through the emotional wringer and delivering an angsty, hot, but incredibly moving, emotionally-satisfying love story. And that is exactly what happened in THE RANCHER’S BABY.
Knox McCoy is a man broken by life. A man who has no desire to move past his grief because he isn’t ready to let go and has no intention of ever being ready. But he will show up when his best friend needs him, despite his own private pain. Because he cares about her, and he doesn’t care about much of anything anymore.
Selena Jacobs doesn’t need a man to save her, but she is happy to see Knox and willing to let him play protector if it helps to give him even some small sense of purpose. What she isn’t willing to do, however, is allow the long-simmering attraction between them to edge into something real. She has zero interest in a having a serious relationship with someone, not even Knox, her friend and longtime secret crush.
Then Knox kisses Selena and it tilts her world, showing her exactly what she’s been missing out on for years. She tells herself she can fight it. That it doesn’t have to become a thing. Even as she finds herself wanting for it to very much become a thing…just maybe without the ring and baby.
Knox has no desire to become a husband and father again and Selena swears that isn’t something she wants, either. Marriage. Kids. Neither one of them want that road to potential heartbreak. But then, even the best laid plans run into a kink every now and again…and Knox and Selena set to discover what they want and what they find are two entirely different things.
THE RANCHER’S BABY is a well-written, emotionally dynamic love story about two people doing the best they can to put the broken pieces of their lives back together again. It’s a passionate story about what happens when crossing the line comes with unexpected consequences and the happiness you thought lost to you forever speeds to life when you least expect it.
