The greater the risk, the hotter the reward…

23905954Homicide cop Troy Bennett had a reputation with the Chicago PD for being fearless and in control—until the night his daredevil partner is killed during a raid. From that moment on, he swears he’ll never again be responsible for the loss of a loved one. To escape his demons, Troy transfers to the NYPD, bringing him up close and personal with Ruby Elliott, a beautiful, street-savvy pool hustler.

Reckless and stubbornly independent, Ruby embodies everything Troy’s avoiding, but when she walks into the pub he’s at with his new coworkers and blows his carefully laid plans to hell, Troy knows he has to have her—risks be damned. But there’s a connection between Ruby’s shadowed past and a case Troy’s working involving a notorious Brooklyn felon, throwing her safety into jeopardy. Confronted with his biggest fear, will Troy push Ruby away to keep her safe or fight to keep her in his arms where she belongs?

“Next time you bend over a table, I’m going to wrap all that hair around my fist and pull your head back. I want to watch your eyes glaze over when I fuck you into oblivion.”

~ Troy Bennett, His Risk To Take ~

His Risk to Take is the second book in Tessa Bailey’s Line of Duty series (Entangled Brazen) and the prequel book for her Crossing the Line series (Entangled Select). You’ll probably want to read this book before you read the follow-up, Crossing the Line novella, Riskier Business, as it features the same two leads you’ll find in this one.

In this book, NYC police officer Troy Bennett meets street-smart pool hustler, Ruby Elliot, and hoo boy, do the sparks fly between them. Right from the start, it’s apparent this is going to be a really hot couple, and a really hot read.

When the story opens, Troy is weighted with guilt over an incident from his past and brand new to town, having just transfered from the Chicago P.D. Homicide Division to the NYPD Emergency Services Unit. Two of his fellow officers tasked with showing him the ropes all week have taken him out for celebratory drinks at a dive bar called Quincy’s, and that’s when Troy sees and meets Ruby Elliot.

“So, blue eyes. Why don’t you stop staring and buy me a drink? I don’t want to dehydrate before you work up the nerve.”

~ Ruby Elliot, His Risk To Take ~

Ruby is beautiful, forthright, and much smarter than people give her credit for, and while Troy only wanted a distraction for the night, he finds himself more intrigued and turned on than he expected. Ruby’s hot, and she isn’t afraid to challenge him, or to let him challenge her, both of which Troy loves and wants to experience with her in the bedroom. She’s exactly the kind of woman he’s been looking to let go with, and he’s itching to do just that, though he does wait for her to make the first move.

Honestly, Troy is a dirty-talking nice guy. He wants to take Ruby apart in the bedroom, but he also wants to know Ruby is safe outside of it. Which, in my book, makes him one of the best kind of romance heroes. It’s really no wonder Ruby is so taken with him.

Hot and magnetic, with two characters who have the absolute best kind of chemistry, His Risk To Take is a fantastic start to the Crossing the Line series and a fun continuation in the Line of Duty series. If you haven’t yet read this book, I highly recommend giving it a chance. Tessa Bailey is a phenomenal author and her books do not disappoint.
