She was my sister’s best friend until tragedy struck, then she became my world. I wanted to stay with her and build a life together, but the pain from our past made a future impossible.
While she ran away from the memories and rose to fame, I left on a mission to seek vengeance. Then a call came that changed everything and our worlds collided once again, but this time, there was no going back.
The tenth book in the Guarding Her series by Anna Brooks, Focus includes a protective alpha hero and an imperiled famous actress. Littered with classic romance tropes like a hero as protector, best friend’s sister, friends to lovers, and second chance romance, Focus will give both romance and romantic suspense readers all the emotion and adrenaline-packed feels in a short, tight, fast-paced package.
When Exie is kidnapped, the only thing that saves her from panicking is what Callan, her best friend, an expert in kidnapping and ransom, taught her to do: don’t panic and wait for him to come for her. Easy to say, harder to put into practice. Yet she does it, and he keeps his end of the bargain, too.
This is my first read by this author and I enjoyed the blend of romance and suspense, along with the twists and turns of the plot. Granted, some of the story plots were a little far-fetched and I did figure one out early on in the story, but not so much that I couldn’t enjoy the read. It is fiction, after all, and the characters were strong, both in themselves and in their belief in each other.
Overall, this was an enjoyable suspense read with great characterization and pacing. The story moved at a fast-paced and the love story, though complicated, was great.
