Book Summary

26120681The Smallest Mistake

Three went in; one came out. For five years, no trace has been found of two high-school friends who went hiking in the woods near Nashville. The third teen, Amber Ryder, was discovered at the bottom of a ravine with a broken arm, head trauma–and zero memory of the horror that put her there.

Will Put You

What started as a cold case has become a fresh hell for forensic technician Georgia Morgan. Another woman’s body is found in the woods, and it leads to the missing teens’ remains. But while Georgia works with Amber to try and reawaken her memories, her gut tells her the worst is yet to come.

At A Killer’s Mercy

Homicide Detective Jake Bishop can’t be sure whether Amber is an expert manipulator or the killer’s next target. Either way, he’s determined to protect Georgia. Because the deeper she digs into the past, the deadlier the secrets that emerge, and a nightmare years in the making is about to come to a bloody, terrifying end…

Praise for Mary Burton’s You’re Not Safe

“Burton once again demonstrates her romantic suspense chops with this taut novel.”

My Thoughts

*ARC provided by Publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review*

Vulnerable is an extremely well-written and intriguing suspense thriller, with multi-layered characters and a villain twisted and sick enough to make you shiver. The book is easy to read, and the author managed to keep hold of my attention throughout all 384 pages.

One of the things I loved about Vulnerable was all the forensic detail author Mary Burton put into this book, as it took me back to my undergrad days when I was perched on a seat in a crowded lecture hall learning about forensics, crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and police procedures. It’s been over a decade since I got my bachelor degrees in psychology and law enforcement, but my love for psychology and the criminal justice system is still going strong.

And that’s what attracts me to read books like Vulnerable. Not only do books like this get into the mind of a killer, but they also get into the mind of the forensic technicians working the scenes and the homicide detectives hunting the suspects down. Sometimes I’m more critical of these books because I have studied more in this area than the average reader, but other times, like this one, I’m completely swept away by the story, the characters, and the case, wondering who the killer is and what their motive for murder was.

If you’re like me and you love a well-written romantic suspense thriller, even one that’s more heavy on the suspense and police procedures than the romance, you’ll love Vulnerable by Mary Burton. It’s got loads of twists and turns, and it takes readers on a journey with the characters as they work the case and try to catch a serial murderer.

Fantastic suspense read!

About the Author

15020.jpgMARY BURTON’s southern family has always enjoyed tall tales and a good yarns. Early on, MB realized that Story had tremendous power to inspire strong responses such fear, laughter, love and even sorrow. It didn’t matter if the tale was found in the pages of a book, spoken in hushed tones around a Girl Scout campfire, or spouted at an old fashioned southern family reunion. This appreciation of story motivated MB to earn an English degree from Virginia’s Hollins University.

After decade of working in marketing and sales, MB became convinced she could write and sell one of the many stories buzzing around her brain. Fingers crossed, MB left the marketing profession and devoted all her spare time to writing a novel. Soon after, she sold her first manuscript to Harlequin Historicals. Since that initial sale, MB had written twelve historical romances for Harlequin Historicals, four short romantic suspenses for Silhouette Romantic Suspense and a non-fiction book The Insider’s Guide to Direct Marketing. Her first single title romantic suspense for Zebra I’m Watching You is a December 2007 release.

In 2005, The Unexpected Wife was a finalist Romance Writers of America’s RITA contest and Wise Moves was 2006 nominee for the Romantic Times’ Critics Choice Award. I’m Watching You received critical acclaim from New York Times Best Selling author Carla Neggers who said, “Taut, compelling and emotional, I’m Watching You is romantic suspense at its most riveting. Mary Burton delivers a page-turner.”
MB resides in Virginia where she enjoys yoga, cooking, hiking and the occasional triathlon.
