THE SHADOW WORK SELF-REFLECTION DECK

A New Approach to Shadow Work

THE SHADOW WORK SELF-REFLECTION DECK

Sometimes life gives you things at the exact moment that you need them the most. That was my first thought when I was offered the chance to review THE SHADOW WORK SELF-REFLECTION DECK by Jor-El Caraballo. The deck came at the perfect time for me, as I was working out how best to help someone whose past trauma had become a large stumbling block in their current relationship with someone and with themselves.

So, let’s talk about The Shadow Work Self-Reflection Deck, shall we?

MY THOUGHTS

As someone who spent over a decade working with at risk high school students, I know the value of finding new ways to reach people. To help them overcome the things that continue to hold them back. To help them see they are more than just what they have experienced. That they belong. They matter. They are enough.

This shadow work self-reflection deck proved to be a great tool in helping start meaningful and important conversations in my day job. To help someone process thoughts they didn’t quite know how to articulate into a journaling experience that allowed them to share thoughts and trauma without having to verbally state anything they were not yet ready to discuss aloud.

Every other day, we have chosen a new card to talk about and write down some thoughts. The grounding and breathing exercises help to keep things in the here and now while also fostering a safe environment to think about some not so pleasant things from the past like fears, boundaries, childhood memories, identity, dreams, and more. It has provided a freedom and a new way to reflect on events and feelings without the fear of having to talk about it or show anyone if that is not wanted.

I enjoyed the deck so much I spoke about it with some peers and they wound up ordering the deck and workbook as well. In the two weeks that we spoke about this deck, they have used their own cards in their counseling practice with inmates and substance abuse clients and have found it useful to speak about different topics with their clients.

The Shadow Work Self-Reflection Deck is a highly useful tool that can be used by a variety of people in different settings and in different ways. This type of variance makes this deck a must-have for anyone looking to further their own self-reflection work or to help further the self-reflection of others. But be sure to read the grounding and breathing exercises as these will be quite helpful in keeping people safe and feeling secure while focusing on harder topics from the past.
