The Meg (Movie Review)

THE MEG

The Meg4.5 out of 5 stars, PG-13, 1 hr 52 min

Genre: Action | Thriller

Release Date: August 10, 2018

I personally loved this movie. It was everything I wanted it to be and though parts of it was predictable, it still managed to surprise and entertain me. Jason Statham played a great reluctant hero named Jonas Taylor and I loved his interactions with the little girl in this film, Meiying, played by Shuya Sofia Cai. In many ways, Shuya stole the scene away from Stratham and you could see the adoration on his face whenever she did.

In The Meg, Statham’s Jonas Taylor is an expert deep-sea rescue diver who left the field 5 years ago when he lost two friends and crew members after a rescue op went bad. At the time, he told everyone something was down there with them that attacked the ship but no one believed him. As a result, he left the field and lives in Thailand where he avoids diving and pretends to not have a care in the world.

Things change for Jonas when his friend and former college Mac (played by Cliff Curtis) and Mac’s new boss, Zhang (Winston Chao), show up to discuss a rescue operation that involves Jonas’s ex-wife (played by Jessica McNamee) being trapped at the bottom of the sea after something attacked her deep-sea sub. Unexpectedly, Jonas agrees to help and the three men go to the underwater

research facility to mount a rescue mission.  Not surprisingly, not everyone is happy that Zhang and Mac have chosen to involve Taylor but that, too, changes once they discover the creature everyone thought didn’t exist not only does but it’s also a Megalodon, a prehistoric shark that was supposed to be extinct.

The Meg is a fun, entertaining, aquatic action thriller that, though it contains some predictable moments, also contains some great thrills and has a surprising amount of emotional resonance. If you’re looking for a film that will make you forget about time and completely engage you in what is happening on screen, this is the one to do it.

About the Movie

A deep-sea submersible-part of an international undersea observation program-has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew-and the ocean itself-from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.
