Okay, full disclosure. When I first started reading this book, I did not like the hero, Dane, at all. He seemed too much like an arrogant business man without the first clue about the people around him, the people who work for him. Everything was about the bottom line and he didn’t seem to care about how his bottom line would affect his workers, which made me dislike him intensely. I think this may have been the author’s intention really, because shortly after I wrote the above in my notes, Dane got the shock of his life and I began to see the human beneath the rough, tough businessman exterior. And I liked him.
Dane is a no-nonsense business guy and yet, he still has enough heart in him to get how much his life just changed without any warning whatsoever. Some men would be angry about that, and maybe a part of Dane is, but only because he wasn’t told about his daughter sooner, not because she exists at all. This made me sympathetic toward him, when just before I wanted to whack him upside his businessman’s head.
I loved that Dane didn’t wait around to make the necessary changes to accommodate having a child–a daughter–in his life. He might not know what to do as far as relating to his daughter, but he isn’t at all hesitant to tell Pam, his secretary and the heroine in this story, what he needs and wants in regards to his daughter, and to ask Pam for her help. I find that a pretty admirable and sympathetic quality because this guy is obviously lost when it comes to kids, but he also cares enough to try to make things better for Dani, and that’s shows he’s got a lot more depth to him than the businessman exterior he portrays to most of the world.
I really enjoyed this book, and it’s characters. It’s well-written and the story held my attention throughout. I cared about what happened to the leads, and to Dani, which is one of the most important parts in reading a book, in my opinion.
The Millionaire Daddy Project is a good, solid read with the very important message of doing everything you can for your kids, even when you doubt yourself and the very idea of being responsible for a tiny human scares you. Or rather, especially when it scares you. There is also something to be said for falling for the person you least expected to fall for, someone who has been right under your nose all along…
