On paper, Max Segreti and Patrick Guinness couldn’t be more different. One is a bright law student who works hard to become the attorney his father expects and he himself dreams. The other a talented former football star with a future that is nothing like he expected it to be. And yet, from the moment these two men meet, there is a connection they can’t deny and a chemistry that even three years apart doesn’t manage to erase.
I really enjoyed reading about Max and Patrick. Max is a sweet, caring guy who just wanted to make his father proud and make his dreams of becoming a lawyer come true while also being true to himself and the things he needs and wants. Patrick, however, is a cynical former athlete with too much pride and too little trust, and that makes his attraction to Max all the more complicated. Because Max comes from money and Patrick no longer has any to spare.
The author made good strides in crafting the social differences between the characters, though I admit I would’ve liked to have had more depth and back story for why Patrick has such a huge chip on his shoulder regarding Max and his family’s money. I can guess the reasons, of course, but I would have much rather had them displayed in the book and been able to witness the character’s emotional connection to those reasons. Not having that background left a bit of a disconnect for me as a reader, though I still enjoyed the book and the character without it. I just wonder how much more I would’ve enjoyed this book had the author fleshed out that little bit of Patrick’s backstory.
All in all, I really liked Falling for the Player. It was a well-written book, and despite everything I said above, and I liked both Max and Patrick enough to care about their ability to work things out between them. The sex scenes were hot as hell and I had more than a couple of favorite lines from Patrick because when he was on, he was seriously on with that mouth of his, and I loved that about him. I loved how he connected with Max in those private moments, when he dropped his guard and let his beliefs about their future go for a while.
If you’re looking for a book that’s both sweet and sexy, romantic and intense, complicated and compelling, Falling for the Player is a definite book to check out. I enjoyed the story and the characters a lot and will be looking forward to reading whatever comes next for this new-to-me author.
