My Thoughts

This is my first read by Jodi Ellen Malpas and as such, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from it. But Bodyguard stories have long been my guilty pleasure and when I was given the chance to review this book, I jumped in with both hands held out…and I wasn’t disappointed.

Written in first person with dual points of view, The Protector is a fast-paced, suspenseful read that immediately draws readers into the story, and into the lives of the characters, Jack Sharp and Camille Logan. It’s a story about a man troubled by his past and a woman determined to make it on her own, and I absolutely loved it from the start.

Jake is a troubled man, weighted down by guilt and a past full of demons he can’t shake. He is haunted by his mistakes, but at the same time, driven to never make them again. He has vices he uses to distract himself from his troubles—work, alcohol, sex—but the truth is, nothing works for long. He truly is a man at the end of his rope, and yet, he keeps going, taking job after job in hopes that one of them will distract him from the nightmares he faces each day.

Headstrong and fiercely independent, the last thing Camille wants is her father interfering in her life, hiring her a bodyguard. But at the same time, she recognizes he’s worried about her. Of course, that doesn’t mean Camille has to make it easy on the man playing her 24/7 shadow.

Camille and Jake don’t have an easy time of it when they first meet. They clash more than they mesh, but their the chemistry between them is potent and grows stronger the more time they spend in each other’s presence. Except getting involved with the person he’s supposed to protect is a mistake Jake doesn’t want to make. It’s dangerous and foolish on his part. But it’s there, like lightning in a bottle, and no matter how hard Jake tries, he can’t shake the feelings Camille invokes in him.

I loved this book a lot. The story was interesting and suspenseful, the characters dynamic and real, and the overall feel of the book was truly sigh worthy for the bodyguard-forbidden-romance-trope lover in me. Funny, cute, sexy, suspenseful, Jodi Ellen Malpas’ The Protector truly had it all. Absolutely loved it.
