BOOK REVIEW
Despite the unexpected personal events that took place when I first started reading His Christmas Guardian by Cindy Dees back in October, I enjoyed finishing the book over the weekend immensely. The characters were both well-written and well-presented, the two of them easily caring me along on their journey. In fact, despite a three-months-long break between when I started and when I finished this book, I remembered every bit of what happened between Nicholas Kane and Alexander Creed.
As two covert government operatives who operate in different ways with different mindsets, Nick and Alex are remarkably similar where it counts. Yet they are also different enough that it keeps things truly interesting between them. To Alex, Nick has a death wish, or at the very least, doesn’t seem to believe he’ll outlive the job. To Nick, Alex is a bit of an enigma, but also one of the most interesting men he’s ever met. He’s a Christmas-holic and a government fixer, making calls others can’t, and for all intents and purposes, he’s extremely good at it. And he’s as well-trained as Nick is himself, yet Nick worries his skill will not be enough to outmatch the man they are hunting, Nick’s former boss, Gray.
It was fun to read how Nick and Alex got to know and trust one another, and how easy it was for them to fall in love, despite the fact that both men operate in the shadows more than not. But falling for each other was only the first step, to do anything about it, they had to stay alive, and that meant they needed to get ahead of Gray and his men before it was too late.
Nick and Alex worked well together and their care and concern for each other really made an impact in regards to their operation and their relationship to it. Each man had a stake in what happened and yet, as high as the stakes were, they couldn’t stop worrying about the other one’s safety. I loved that. I loved how they trusted and depended on each other, working together to catch the bad guy.
His Christmas Guardian was a great romance story, with wonderful characterization, and the love between these two men was truly believable and memorable. Highly recommend checking this one out, even if it is after Christmas.
