Synopsis: It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him.
Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions.
I didn’t think he’d call me back.
I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become.
Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets.
Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.
A complete STANDALONE.
Drunk Dial by Penelope Ward
Book Review
Drunk Dial is a swoon-worthy friends to lovers, second chance romance between two people who have made some big mistakes in their lives and are doing their best to learn from them. Funny, heartwarming, and beautifully written, Drunk Dial is Penelope Ward at her charming, witty best.
Rana Saloomi spent over a decade wondering about her first crush, Landon Roderick, and blaming him for not coming to tell her goodbye when she was forced to leave her home. So when Rana has a little too much to drink one night and looks Landon up, she winds up calling and yelling at him. Then she hangs up on him. She never expects him to call her back. But he does. And she surprises herself when she answers the call and talks to him again.
Rana and Landon are amazing together and their slow-build love story is both addictive and consuming. In fact, once I started reading this book, I quickly discovered I couldn’t put it down. There is a natural, effortless feel to the text that easily sweeps a reader up into the story and carries them right on through to the end. An easy, memorable read that is as sweet as it is entertaining, as hot and emotional as it is addicting.
There is an overall universal appeal to Drunk Dial and its lead characters that I think many a reader can relate to and understand on a deep, emotional level. As humans, we all carry around baggage, some heavier than others. We’re all flawed, scared, vulnerable, scared to be vulnerable, and we react to things in a host of different ways. Rana and Landon are the same… flawed, lonely, scared, vulnerable, and it’s these emotional reactions that make them such honest, raw, and real story people.
If you’ve not yet had the chance to read one of Penelope Ward’s books, Drunk Dial is the perfect standalone romance to start your journey. It’s a fantastic read with two equally fascinating and fantastic characters. Highly recommend checking it out.
