Over the Top is the fourth book in the Montana Maverick’s series by Rebecca Zanetti, though it is the first book I’ve read within the series. In the story, Dawn has harbored a not so secret crush on Hawk for years while Hawk has carried a secret torch for her for just as long, and now thanks to his job and because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, she’s in danger.
When Hawk comes home for a week’s leave, he’s on edge and restless, and doing his best to forget about his attraction to his best friend’s sister. But when he realizes she might’ve forgotten about him, he can’t quite bring himself to step back from the ledge. So, instead, he goes after what he wants, and what he wants, is Dawn.
I really love stories about unrequited love, especially when they aren’t quite as unrequited as they seem. I also love that sense of the forbidden, and add in a protective hero and the slightest edge of danger, written by an author who knows how to tell a story and captivate readers with compelling characters, and man, am I hooked.
Over the Top was just such a read for me. I liked it from the moment Hawk appeared on the page because his emotions seemed real and natural to me. There’s just something about a man who isn’t quite settled beneath his own skin, someone who doesn’t even realize what he needs until he’s forced to contemplate the loss of it. That’s who Hawk was to me, and I seriously loved that because it made for such an engrossing and entertaining read. And I loved Hawk’s sexy, take charge attitude, even as he did his best to push Dawn away in an effort to keep her safe.
The secondary characters in this were fun, and I probably would’ve loved them more had I read the first three books in this series first. Not that they weren’t lovable in this one, they were, and they made Dawn and Hawk’s predicament all the more fun because of their interference and the humor they brought to the situation.
If you’re looking for a great contemporary romance read about satiating long-held desires and figuring out how to hold onto what’s important despite the dangers in having it, coveting it, I recommend reading Over the Top by Rebecca Zanetti. It’s definitely worth it!
